PC: What do you love most about telling stories in animation and stop-motion?ĪS: What I love about telling stories in animation and stop-motion may also be what's most challenging about it we have to create something out of literally nothing, or in other words, nothing is "for free". He eventually got both my husband and I to move to Portland in 2007 and I haven't looked back! I continue to learn so much, but at the core what that really means is if you've got a talented, smart and dedicated team and you can help move them all in the same direction, you can make magic happen. I had worked with Henry Selick on and off for many years in the Bay Area. PC: How did you come to LAIKA and what have you learned since?ĪS: I started to work on our first film, Coraline, from San Francisco where I was still living in 2006. They are physical objects brought to life one frame at a time that convince an audience they are living, breathing characters with both hearts and souls. To name just a few: using state-of-the-art 3D printing to enhance our replacement animation technique working in lock-step with our VFX department to seamlessly make our worlds as large as we need them to be (our matte painting and set extensions are unparalleled), and our 'puppets' are both works of art as well as technical feats of genius. We've been pushing the art of performance with our characters’ facial animation and our overall style I think the industry has taken notice of how we've propelled stop-motion animation forward with innovations born out of our persistence to keep it fresh and alive as we continue into the 21st Century. And there's even a scene where our heroes have to attempt to navigate through a group of sleeping creatures, bringing to mind the close-corners horror scenes in "A Quiet Place." "Underwater" also just has a great ensemble cast, led by Kristen Stewart and Vincent Cassel, whom you immediately care about and root for, similar to the family in "A Quiet Place.PC: What has been LAIKA’s impact and significance in the world of animation and stop-motion?Īrianne Sutner: We've been impactful in a lot of ways, not the least of which I believe is that the animation industry and its professionals come to expect a certain level of both surprise and excellence when it comes to a LAIKA release.

Like the creatures in "A Quiet Place," the monsters in "Underwater" are fantastically designed for simultaneously maximizing cool and terrifying viewers.

But in its second half, as the characters begin to realize that there's something in the depths with them, the movie begins to resemble "A Quiet Place." The first portion of the movie plays out very similarly to the first portion of "The Descent," where the horror comes purely from the environment. "Underwater" opens with an explosive (or rather, implosive) sequence as an earthquake rocks the foundation of a drilling and research facility at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, causing cracks in the walls and implosions due to pressure. "Arrival" asks some of the same questions that "A Quiet Place" does in relation to parents, children, and a world that might only offer death. The emotional core of "Arrival" is based on the relationship between Louise and her daughter, who suffers from an incurable fatal illness. When other countries begin to shut down their communications with Louise's team, the movie comes to an exciting climax.īut what makes "Arrival" most special and most interesting for fans of "A Quiet Place" is the emotional heart of the movie. Not all of the army members at the base believe that the aliens have good intentions. While the interactions with the aliens in "Arrival" are overwhelmingly calm, quiet, and almost meditative, it develops tension and delivers thrills throughout from the relationships between the humans at the base on Montana and the relationships between governments. The aliens have landed in 12 ships around the globe, one of which is in Montana, where Louise and physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) work to understand their language and technology.
